what is shapeshifting?
unsurprisingly there are many answers
The only way to attempt to answer this question is to let the many shapes in me have their say.
I’ve connected with the archetype of the Shapeshifter for years now. It’s been a flexible container to claim while trying on different identities, jobs, haircuts, etc. It’s held me through chapters of avoidance and doubt. I’ve noticed that often as soon as I claim that I Am Something, I become a toddler that refuses to get dressed. Uncomfortable, itchy, trapped. Who can blame the toddler? We’re animals at our core, and clothing takes some getting used to. Maybe I’ve felt that way about different parts of myself, and the roles I take on out in the world.
So, here is a 〜Shapeshifting Manifesto〜 of sorts. Admittedly, I am writing this in pencil. Some of it will change, but right now, here she is.
Id love to hear what resonates with parts of you ▨ ◍ ⟁ ▦ ◁ !
A Shapeshifting Manifesto
Shapeshifting is a commitment to movement. As life moves, we move. Sometimes this looks like a dance class or a little yoga, some breathwork, a nap, an improvisation score, some vagal toning, then a song, sometimes even the club. Movement brings the shapeshifter into flow with life on her terms.
Shapeshifting is a praxis for how to get through life as a modern human living in 2025. Specifically living under regimes that would like to put you in specific, knowable containers. Shapeshifting resists singular, stable identities. The shapeshifter recognizes that each of us are shaped by context [histories, culture, place, etc.], that the context is always changing, and each Shapeshifter is affected differently. They cultivate awareness of where they are, what shape they might be contorting into, what shapes they want to be/feel, and how to get a little more free each day.
Shapeshifting is a practice of surrender to Change. The shapeshifter knows that the concept of Change is the only Constant is over-said, yet under-practice. Change is not just a romantic road trip towards an ideal state or utopia. It has ups and downs. It challenges the parts of us that crave certainty and stability. The shapeshifter cultivates practices for being with the never-ending waves of change. And quite importantly, they do this alongside support networks of fellow shapeshifters.
Shapeshifting is a practice of radical self companionship. It is a practice of being with the many parts of ourselves, the many shapes we take on. The shapeshifter companions the many parts within, so that they can cultivate more loving relationships with others and in the world writ-large.
Shapeshifting is multidimensional. Again, refusing boxes and labels, the shapeshifter knows that personal is political, the physical is spiritual, the emotional is material, the creative is practical. The shapeshifter does not hide from embracing the depths of their self, their dreams and creative desires. They know these depths and corners spills out across time and space, affecting the world in ways they may never fully know.
Shapeshifting is a dance with the unknown. The shapeshifter can taste, smell, feel, sense that other worlds are possible, but the details are fuzzy. But this fuzzy, messy, dark unknown does not scare them. They willingly lean into this dance — taking a step forward, spinning around, leading and following, and falling into the next shape life asks of them. Ultimately, trusting their body, their spark, and the support systems that keep them going.
Shapeshifting is a practice of enchantment with seen and unseen matter. The shapeshifter sees faces in tree bark and feels the shape of their lover’s heart. The shapeshifter takes a humble bow before the vastness of this textured, sensuous world and willingly falls in love, over and over again.
That feels right for now ▨ ◍ ⟁ ▦ ◁
